Now with the advertisement over, lets get to the blog post
It's funny how you can forget something for a month and then suddenly recall it. This happened to me two hours ago. During my final dinner with my class I was talking a lot to one of my teachers. We talked about the future of course and I mentioned writing and that someone I admire, look up to and aim to be like is Jonas Jonasson. The author of the book The one hundred year old man who climbed out of a window and disappeared. Apparently we both like him a lot and after some talking I promised to send him a text I wrote some years ago in the gymnasium during a task to copy the writing style of a famous writer.
I forgot it after our conversation but realised it today and spent the last days translating the text into English. It did get a bit worse as I am obviously worse at English than Swedish. The thing that I love about Jonas Jonasson isn't just the story, it is also the special way he writes and that turned out to be a lot harder to copy in English. I did my best tho. At the bottom of the page you can see the Swedish version, for those of you who read Swedish I recommend that one, it's better.
Sven who went through the church doors and got married
It was an entirely normal church they were in, he, -Sven-, and his soon-to-be wife. Holding hands while the organ howled on. He didn't quite understand why it had to make so much sound that he could barely hear his own thoughts but maybe people liked it that way.
There was a lot of room for improvement at a typical wedding, Sven thought to himself. For example the ridiculously slow walk to the altar where the short bald priest was waiting for them. When Sven stood in front of him the little man was also going to talk a lot, and tell them what they would do as married. Sven never quite understood why the little man would get to decide that and not he and his wife. Perhaps the little man that was now talking as if his life depended on it simply liked to tell others what to do. Perhaps his parents had raised him to be like that and if that was the case, who was Sven to change it. No, it would have to stay the way it was. He politely answered yes when the priest asked him if he would do everything for his soon-to-be wife. Sven found the question quite stupid, he couldn't come up with any other reason he would be standing in front of this altar right now.
He considered asking if it wasn't time to exchange rings now. He found it quite unnecessary but after all it was something that you usually did at weddings. And this wedding was going to follow the traditions, his beloved had made that clear to him. It made him happy to realise the question wouldn't have to be asked, half a minute later the little priest interrupted his line of thought by saying that they could exchange rings. Now things would get a bit more pleasant.
The kiss that followed wasn't bad either, perhaps not everything about weddings was as tedious as he thought it would be. Just as that thought crossed his mind he was forced to go down on one knee while someone started talking. Sven held back a sigh and wondered how long it would go on. He had patience when it was needed but the same couldn't be said for his bad knee. Thankfully he didn't have to hold the position for too long, soon he got to stand up again after a final little protest from the knee. After that it was apparently time to leave the church the same way they had come, at the same ridiculously slow pace.
Sven soon realised that the way out of the church was lined with even more annoyances than when he had walked it the other way. He had been forced to spend some extra time on fixing his hair before the wedding and people throwing rice in it wasn't exactly pleasant. Funnily enough the rice seemed to make his beloved happy, she had a beaming smile on his face. After all that was good. He tried to copy her smile as well as he could so he wouldn't raise suspicions of that he wasn't enjoying it all fully. The forced smile was tested when he realised that he would miss the football game that he had hoped to see but Sven had discipline. He thought of how nice it would be to be on the grandstand instead of outside the church, where he currently was.
After getting out of church there was another small walk. But now it was time to eat, and Sven did like to eat. He had thought that this would be one of the highlights of the everlasting ceremony but his dreams were quickly crushed when he saw the food. He had been hoping for a large haunch of meat and a beer, instead he got a half-full glass of wine and a tiny little piece of some kind of meat. He almost felt sad for it. To be cut off from an animal only to become something so small and unappetizing could hardly be fun. Despite that he nicely finished what was placed on his plate. He got a few weird looks when he downed the liquid in his glass in one go. Sven wasn't really sure why, it was hardly strong enough to be any trouble for anyone to do so. He decided to not think too much about it, he felt like he had performed quite well today.
Then it was time for gifts, he was hoping for a new tv with many sport channels but he had a feeling that his dream wouldn't come to pass, a feeling that turned out to be completely correct. They got many things, sadly few of them seemed useful. Bottles of wine, coffee machines and toasters, someone had even bothered buying a small sculpture. He noted that at least a few of the items could be useful. If his beloved, his wife, he corrected himself with a smile, got the wine she could hardly complain if he went to the pub for a beer. A golden spoon they got could probably work as a shoehorn. It was all about looking at the bright side!
After spending an excessive amount of time at the table he stood up for a dance with his wife. Some more public ridicule? It sure felt like that but according to the look on his wifes face it wasn't the case. Soon everyone else also started to dance and he felt a bit less eyes on him. About the same time as his bad knee told him to stop his wife told him that it was time to leave and spend some time on their own. He realised that the entire circus might finally be over and that he might finally get to take a nap. As they walked towards the car he was smiling, for almost the first time today a genuine one he thought.
He also smiled and had thoughts about what happened later that night and the honeymoon they went on. But those are a different story.
