When you buy candy you make a subconscious choice to give yourself something instead of someone else, you do yourself a favor. When you donate money you want to help, and subconsciously to feel like a good person. Wouldn't we normally want to help other humans then? If you see a person and an animal hanging from a cliff but only have time to save one I don't think you would hesitate, you would pick the human being. Why don't we react the same way here? It really confuses me, anyone got a good answer?
This video is not related by the post but I feel like more people should see it, the poetry part is beautifully done and the video's got a point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7dLU6fk9QY
